When preparing to start a fitness exercise regimen, you first need to decide whether or not you want to invest in a gym membership or simply buy the materials you need to workout at home. Based upon your weight loss diet goal, it is possible to tailor your workout to either place. Working out at home and working out at the gym both have their various advantages and disadvantages which we’ve outlined below. The best choice for you is purely personal preference based upon your motivation and social needs.

Working out at the gym:


The high price of gym memberships comes along with a variety of benefits. Depending on the particular gym you join, you will be given access to an assortment of workout machines, a swimming pool, a steam room, a hot tub, tennis courts, an inside track, aerobics classes, basketball courts and racquetball rooms. If you suffer from social anxiety or simply prefer to work out alone then the gym is clearly not the place for you.

While it is possible to work out at home and avoid the gym, the gym touts many advantages. It gives you access to numerous machines that would be nearly impossible to fit into you own living space. The gym also may be able to provide you with the tools and motivation you need to keep you working out and help you to achieve your fitness and fast weight loss goals.

While it has many advantages, a gym has many drawbacks as well. Joining a gym requires a monthly fee and often a long-term contract, but gives you no guarantee that the machines you desire will be available at any given time.

Working out at home:

When traveling to the gym it is not uncommon to arrive only to find few parking spots and a wait line next to each machine. By working out at home not only do you have no competition for space, but you avoid the travel time it takes to get to the gym as well. The downside of this is that you only have the tools and equipment that you own to perform fitness exercise with. If you are looking for fast weight loss and enjoy workout videos or outside activities, then working out at home and avoiding a gym membership is clearly the answer for you. For those who enjoy burning calories on the elliptical machine, the choice is not so easy.

The busiest times at the gym are in the early morning, after work, and on weekends. If this is your normal workout time then investing in your own at-home equipment might be your only option.

It is also common for individuals who don’t join a gym to lose their motivation and neglect to work out altogether. Only you know if you actually will get moving without the pressures of making the most out of your gym membership hanging over your shoulder. Workout classes are another way to compel yourself to workout. Knowing that you have an obligation at a scheduled time each week helps you develop a habit of going to the gym.

The right choice for you:


Everybody is different and the right answer depends on your own personal goals and needs. Weigh the costs and benefits associated with a gym membership in relation to your own life and lifestyle. Remember to think about your fitness exercise preferences, cost, wait time, available equipment and motivation as you make your decision. If you are unhappy about your choice it is easy enough to change your mind. Be sure to find out about your gym’s cancellation policy before you sign a contract. Many gyms offer trial periods or allow you to pay by the week or the month. Hesitate from signing a long-term contract unless you are sure that joining a gym is the right decision for you.
